Near to Something That Actually Exists

Streets lit, glowing lamps shining bright
In uncharted territory now
It seems the end is not within sight
So I don’t know if I’m going down
And with her black hair waving I ask
With a giant smile, “Missy, where too?”
“I don’t know, but I cannot look back
And I need to explain this to you

My life has been turned upside down
With my head buried underground
All my life I searched for this
But it just left me filled with emptiness
So I climbed in this car for warmth
And now my heart is again torn
So excuse me while I make you feel
Like you were ‘this close’ to something real"

I pulled over to the curbside
Putting it in park, I spoke my mind
“I don’t need one in whom to confide
Believe it or not, I was just fine”
Her nerves regressed and she gave a smile
And decided to ask me to date
I said, “I guess it’s been a while”
Maybe it was luck or maybe fate

My life had been turned upside down
With my head buried underground
All my life I searched for this
But it just left me filled with emptiness
So I climbed in this car for warmth
And now my heart was again torn
So excuse me while you make me feel
Like I was ‘this close’ to something real

As we traveled down the street
There was a sign marked “Dead End”
Seeing the journey was complete
We decided not to pretend
The façade that became of it all
Faded as fast as possible
As we opened the doors to both withdraw
We were in a car that we thought was nautical
But thankfully we read the writing on the wall

Our lives have been turned upside down
With our heads buried underground
All our lives we searched for this
But it just left us filled with emptiness
So we climbed out of this car for warmth
But now our hearts aren’t again torn
So excuse us while we can still feel
Like you we’re this close to something real
